Authentic vs Non Authentic Material

In my personal opinion is designed not for foreign students, but for the real speakers of the language. Refers to authentic texts as texts that are not written for language teaching purposes. Authentic materials is significant because it increases students motivation for learning, makes the learner to face the real language.
-A positive effect on learner motivation.
-It provides authentic cultural information.
-It provides exposure to real language.
-It’s more closely to learners needs.
-It supports a more creative approach to teaching.
Using authentic material, it is inevitable that we face some problems. Like: authentic materials often contain difficult language, unnecessary vocabulary and complex language structures, which causes lower-level classes. But we can use authentic materials depending of the level of your students.

Non-authenticity of some texts is by used Varieties of English. Authenticity means that nothing of the original text is changed; even its presentation are retained.
For example, a newspaper article should be presented as it first appeared, with the same typeface, the same space to the headlines, and so forth. In addition, authentic materials are not originally intended for teaching purposes.
Some teachers would argue that students perceive authentic texts more difficult, their use may decrease motivation for learning. However, the difficulty of a reading exercise depends on the activity that students are required to do, not on the text itself. That is, teachers should grade exercises rather than texts. Texts may not only reduce interest and motivation but also increase difficulty for students, because they do not develop the reading strategies and skills required. “Harmer (1991) says that most course books use non-authentic materials so that students can concentrate on specific grammar items”. He argues that such materials should not be used to try to help students become better readers or listeners, because non-authentic material will not necessarily do that. This does not mean that we as teachers should always provide students with authentic materials, but at least we should try, whenever possible, to use less artificial materials.
